The Martinez Factor

Yesterday I introduced you to Victor Martinez, Spanish radio entrepreneur.  With Hispanics being a majority in Allentown, he is an influential man. As a supporter of Ryan Crosswell for the 7th District, I questioned Martinez about his support for Carol Obando. He insisted that it wasn't because Obando was Latina, but because the other candidates ignored the demographic, even though they are a substantial portion of the population.

With Martinez's support of Ana Tiburcio, I again reached out for comment. Victor this time complained that Ce-Ce Gerlach is too much of a Socialist for mainstream Democrats like himself. He insists that Tiburcio being Latina is a bonus for him, but not the reason for his support.

The meme shown above is from Martinez's Facebook page. Although he maintains that ethnicity is not the basis of his support, if I ever run for office again, I will change my name to Miguel.

  1. yes, racism sucks, no matter what ethnicity is practicing it. Welcome to Allentown, where, as a U.S. born caucasian, I am a second class citizen.

  2. anon@8:13: I do not believe that you are a "second class citizen". However, by your standards the quality of life may be lower. For instance, years ago we enforced noise ordinances against nuisance bars. Now- a-days, drivers are not stopped for car stereos much louder.

  3. This is shocking! The guy who is a "Hispanic radio entrepreneur" is backing Hispanic candidates.

Who would have thought that would happen?

    Did you contact 60 Minutes?

  4. Discrimination is a dual edge sword. One can discriminate against something or in favor of something.

  5. Mayor Matt is either the last non-Latino Mayor or the first in an endless procession of Hispanic Mayors, depending on how you interpret his personal narrative.
Me, I like the “Punk Mayor” spin. Just the same, every Allentonian is about to benefit from his latest international travels.

    1. In the near future Allentown politics will break down into a race between Puerto Ricans and Dominicans.
